AirTags are compatible with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch device capable of running iOS/iPadOS 14.5 or later. Using the built-in U1 chip on iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE 2nd generation and iPhone SE 3rd generation), users can more precisely locate items using UWB (ultra-wideband) technology.
The U1 chip is a compact radio transmitter that locates objects using "Ultrawide Band" (UWB) radio waves. Unlike Bluetooth-based proximity detection, which looks at signal strength to identify what's close, the U1 chip can calculate incredibly exact position information by calculating the time it takes radio waves to bounce from one device to another at the speed of light.
