Bottom line: Yes, you can share an AirTag with family or friends in the Find My app. Apple lets one AirTag be shared with up to five other people, for a total of six users per item including the owner.
This is especially useful for shared items such as family keys, a bag, a bike, an umbrella, or anything multiple people may need to find.
This guide shows you how to share an AirTag, what requirements apply, and how to stop sharing it later.
Can you share an AirTag with family?
Yes. Apple’s current AirTag sharing feature lets the owner share one AirTag with up to five other people in Find My.
Shared users can help find the item on a map, play a sound if it is nearby, and use nearby finding / Precision Finding on supported devices.
What sharing an AirTag lets people do
When an AirTag is shared properly, the people in the sharing group can:
- See the AirTag’s location in the Find My app
- Play a sound to help locate it
- Use nearby finding / Precision Finding where supported
- Be notified when someone new joins the sharing group
Apple also says that when an AirTag is shared with you, unwanted tracking notifications for that AirTag are suppressed while you are part of the sharing group.
Requirements before you share an AirTag
Before you start, Apple says the following requirements must be met:
- Two-factor authentication must be turned on for the owner’s Apple Account
- The person you share with must have an Apple Account and be signed in to iCloud
- The owner and borrowers must have iCloud Keychain turned on
- The owner and borrowers must be using iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, or later
- You can’t share with a child account
Step-by-Step Guide to Share AirTags
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone and select the Items tab.
- From the list of items, tap the AirTag you want to share.
- You’ll see Add Person below the Share This AirTag section. Tap it.
- Tap Continue to proceed.
- Enter the Apple Account information of the person you want to add, then select the person you want to share with.
- To add more people, tap the Add button and repeat the process.
- When you are done, send the invitation.
What happens after you share it
Once the invitation is accepted, the Share This AirTag section shows the people who currently have access to that AirTag.

If someone is invited but does not accept, the AirTag does not become fully shared with them yet.
If the owner shares an AirTag with you correctly in Find My, Apple says you stop receiving unwanted tracking notifications for that AirTag while you are borrowing it.

How to Stop Sharing an AirTag
If you ever need to revoke someone’s access to a shared AirTag, do this:
- Open the Find My app, go to the Items tab, and select the shared AirTag.
- Tap the name of the person you want to remove.
- Tap Remove.
- Confirm by tapping Stop Sharing.
After that, the removed person can no longer view the AirTag’s location. Apple also says that once someone leaves the sharing group or the owner removes them, unwanted tracking notifications resume for that AirTag.
If you are the borrower rather than the owner, you can also remove yourself from the sharing group by opening the shared AirTag and tapping Remove.
Bottom line
AirTag sharing is no longer just a new iOS 17 talking point — it is now a standard part of the current AirTag experience. If you share household or family items, it is one of the most practical AirTag features.
The key things to remember are simple: one owner, up to five additional people, the right Apple Account and iCloud requirements, and easy stop-sharing controls when you no longer need shared access.
