Merino Wool Felt

What it is
Design-grade Merino wool felt delivers a balanced combination of firmness and softness for everyday use.
How it’s made (in simple terms)
Wet-felting means the fibers naturally interlock—no synthetic binders needed. Controlled moisture, heat, and agitation compact the wool into a stable sheet with consistent thickness. Many suppliers also offer options like Scotchgard (a protective treatment that helps resist dust and moisture) and self-adhesive backings for interior applications.
Key benefits for buyers
- Acoustic calm: dense felt absorbs and diffuses desk noise for better focus—also helps reduce echo/reverberation that microphones pick up on video calls.
- Thermal comfort: acts as a buffer against warm/cold surfaces, so your wrists and devices feel more neutral to the touch.
- Resilient by nature: elastic wool fibers recover well from compression and daily use.
-
Surface-friendly: the soft hand helps protect desks and devices from micro-scuffs.
- Responsible material: renewable and biodegradable/compostable under appropriate conditions.
Why 3 mm Grey for workspaces
At ~840 g/m², 3 mm Merino felt balances firmness with gentle cushioning—sturdy enough for keyboards, stands, and accessories, soft enough to mute clatter and protect surfaces. Neutral Grey keeps visuals clean across minimalist, classic, and mixed setups.
Practical use cases
- Steadier typing: a stable base under keyboards and wrist supports reduces chatter and slippage.
- Quieter accessories: soft landing for devices, trays, and stands (less clack, fewer micro-marks).
- Protective lining for sleeves: we also use 3 mm Merino felt as a soft, shock-damping lining inside our leather sleeves—it cushions devices, reduces abrasion, and adds mild thermal buffering. Shop: MacBook Leather Sleeves and iPad Leather Sleeves.

Care & long-term maintenance
- Routine: vacuum weekly (or as needed) to lift dust and debris.
- Spot cleaning: dab with mild soap and lukewarm water using a soft cloth/brush; work gently from the outside of the mark inward.
- Avoid: bleach, harsh chemicals, enzyme detergents, very hot water, machine wash/tumble dry, and aggressive rubbing (which can further felt the surface).
- Drying: air-dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Stain tips: act quickly; for oil-based marks, blot (don’t rub) and use a small amount of wool-safe soap.
Sustainability & welfare
- Renewable & durable: wool grows back seasonally and delivers a long service life in use.
- End-of-life options: repurpose as liners/shelf pads/craft material; where local rules allow, compost small, clean 100% wool off-cuts; do not place in mixed recycling streams. Remove any non-wool components before disposal. Contact us about take-back or reuse ideas.
- Animal welfare: we prioritize responsible sourcing from reputable European suppliers. On request, we can share supplier declarations (e.g., responsible shearing, chemical safety standards) applicable to the specific batch.
FAQs
Will the felt pill or shed fibers?
Minimal surface fuzz can appear with new felt and settle with use. Routine vacuuming keeps the surface tidy.
Is it compatible with heated or standing desks?
Yes. The felt acts as a mild thermal buffer and stable base. Avoid placing directly on high-temperature sources.
Can I use it outdoors?
Wool felt is for indoor environments. Outdoor exposure (UV, rain) can alter color and texture.
What’s the difference between wool felt and polyester/PET felt?
Wool felt is natural, temperature-buffering, and sound-damping with a premium feel. Polyester/PET felt is synthetic, typically lighter and less temperature-responsive. Choose based on feel, performance, and sustainability priorities.
Does it work with optical and laser mice?
Yes—3 mm felt provides a smooth, consistent surface for everyday mouse tracking. If you need extra glide, see our leather-insert desk pad.
Notes on natural material
As a natural fiber, wool can show tiny plant inclusions and slight shade variations from batch to batch (wool absorbs dyes differently). These characteristics highlight the authenticity of the material and are not defects.
