Rumors about iPhone 14 / 14 Plus / 14 mini / 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max

iPhone-14

According to rumors, Apple's 2022 iPhones will include a notchless display with a hole-punch camera, an A16 CPU, flush back cameras, and more.

A16 CPU

Looks like the A16 Bionic chip will use TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process. Although the improvement of process-level transistors is limited, the large CPU core is upgraded to Avalanche, and the small core (efficiency core) is upgraded to Blizzard. These will replace the Firestorm + Icestorm combination on A14 Bionic and A15 Bionic respectively.

New iPhones normally have an upgraded A-series processor, but Apple may stray from regular operating procedure this year. Only the iPhone 14 Pro versions, according to Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo, will have the new and speedier A16 processor. According to Kuo, the ordinary iPhone 14 models will continue to employ the same A15 Bionic as the iPhone 13 models, indicating a considerable difference between the Pro and non-Pro iPhones in 2022, and the rumor has been confirmed by other sources. This would be the first time that the Pro iPhone models received a speedier processor, with Apple perhaps adopting this way to minimize costs and also due to continuous supply concerns.

Though the iPhone 14 is expected to use the same A15 Bionic CPU as the iPhone 13 models, leaker ShrimpApplePro claims that the new smartphones will have a "overall performance bump" owing to an improved cellular modem, a new internal design, and other improvements, which might result in quicker performance.

Since 2017, iPhones with Face ID have featured a notch on the front to hold all of the essential technology for face scanning, but that will change with the release of the iPhone 14. The notch is scheduled to be removed from the iPhone 14 Pro models in 2022 in favor of a new design. Appears like Apple will go with a mix of a circular hole-punch cutout for the camera and a pill-shaped cutout to house the crucial Face ID components. Unfortunately, this functionality will be confined to the Pro versions, while the less expensive iPhone 14 models will retain the regular notch.

The camera bumps on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro may become thicker, with the Pro's hump becoming noticeably larger. Apple is likely to provide new color options, possibly including a purple hue.

The iPhone 14 Pro devices might include a titanium frame instead of a stainless steel frame, as well as updated speaker and microphone grilles. Apple may also employ a new vapor chamber thermal technology to keep the iPhone cooler in order to mitigate the impact of quicker CPUs and 5G connection.

The camera on new iPhones is constantly improved, and the iPhone 14 is no exception. The Ultra Wide camera will be improved, and Apple may offer a "periscope" zoom lens that allows for even larger optical magnification, although it's unclear whether this will happen in 2022 or 2023. The Pro iPhone models are rumored to include 48-megapixel cameras and 8K video recording capabilities, however the ordinary iPhone 14 models will not have these features.

Apple is likely to employ Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 processor, the world's first 10-gigabit 5G modem with better communication rates and improved connectivity.

According to Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Apple has bought 5G radio frequency (RF) chips from TSMC, with Apple employing its own technology rather than chips from Samsung. The chips are thought to be made using TSMC's 6-nanometer technology, which allows for a smaller packaging with reduced power consumption. This might result in longer battery life while using 5G technology, as well as compatibility for WiFi 6E

Early iPhone 14 speculations said that all four 2022 iPhone 14 models would feature ProMotion screens with refresh rates up to 120Hz, however that does not appear to be the case. Apple is expected to limit ProMotion technology to iPhone 14 Pro models, a decision that display analyst Ross Young blames to a scarcity of available panels. Young has stated unequivocally that he expects 120Hz refresh rates will remain a feature of the iPhone 14 Pro. Always-on display technology is also likely to be featured as an exclusive feature of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

According to some rumors, Apple does not provide an iPhone 14 mini, instead selling two 6.1-inch iPhones and two 6.7-inch iPhones. The camera bumps are around 5% bigger, as expected, and covers built for iPhone 13 devices are unlikely to suit the iPhone 14 models due to the size increase.

There will be no 5.4-inch iPhone in 2022 since Apple is discontinuing the "small" series due to poor sales. The iPhone 13 small will be the last of the tiny phones, with Apple anticipated to focus on larger-sized iPhones in the future.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are all expected, with the larger 6.7-inch iPhone replacing the mini variant.

At the same time one of Apple's top partners in the Asia-Pacific region has allegedly started preparations to sell new iPhones and iPads, which are slated to be unveiled next month (reportedly September 7). Preparations consist in creating websites for specific models - after all, we know for a long time that Apple does not distribute any promotional marketing materials before the premiere of its devices. This is where the list of planned models has been leaked, which looks quite shocking. Here it is:

  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 mini
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPad 10.2 (10th gen)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (6th gen)
  • iPad Pro 11 (4th gen)

According to Ming-Chi Kuo and other reports, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will both include 6GB of RAM, the same as the iPhone 13 Pro versions. TrendForce, a Taiwanese research firm, has confirmed this.

Apple established a new 1TB storage tier with the iPhone 13 Pro models, and reports say that with the iPhone 14 update, Apple might boost it even higher to 2TB. This rumor comes from a source that isn't often credible, therefore it should be treated with caution until it's confirmed by another more reliable source.

iPhone 14 Release Date
If Apple follows prior launch dates, the iPhone 14 variants are expected to be introduced during an event in September 2022. The majority of iPhone events occur around the first or second week of September.
According to rumors, Apple is assessing iPhone 14 OLED panels as of June 20 in order to prepare for mass production. The component's mass manufacturing is scheduled to commence between July and August, while component shipments for other parts began in June. Foxconn is speeding up hiring in anticipation of the iPhone 14, giving bonuses to employees who join the business and remain for at least four months. Apple has purchased 90 million iPhone 14 devices in anticipation of high demand.
